Project Description
The Accessible Remodel for a veteran in Roanoke was spearheaded by Chris Moore of Senior Remodeling Experts, innovating solutions tailored for veterans like the client, a double amputee seeking to leave a nursing facility for home life with family. The project involved transforming a split-level home to meet the client’s accessibility requirements, supported by the Specially Adapted Housing Grant. Initially, modifications included removing existing concrete to create a level porch entry and overhauling the carport to equalize access at the side entrance.
Inside, the team dismantled a coat closet, constructed a hoist way, and installed a power-actuated VPL for basement access, repurposed as the client’s living quarters. A small bedroom on this level was converted into a fully accessible bathroom, complete with a curbless shower, wall-hung sink, and comfort-height commode. The existing bathroom was transformed into an easily accessible closet. Despite project challenges, the successful alterations enabled the client to move in with family, providing independent living conditions and demonstrating the profound impact of adept modification on quality of life and household harmony.
